The Decision: How Do I Know When It's Time?

This is one of the most heart-wrenching questions we face as pet owners. The bond you’ve built with your best friend is profound, and deciding when to say goodbye can feel overwhelming. As vets and animal lovers, we understand how deeply you care and how difficult it can be to know what’s best. While there may not be a perfect answer, the following considerations can help guide you toward making the most compassionate decision for your pet.

Signs of Pain or Suffering

Is your pet showing signs of pain that cannot be controlled or treated?
Your vet can offer options for managing specific conditions, but not all illnesses respond to treatment. Signs of pain and distress include:

  • Vocalising (whimpering, groaning)
  • Panting or restlessness
  • Reduced appetite or vomiting
  • Difficulty standing or walking
  • Unwillingness to interact or play
  • Uncontrollable anxiety

Even with medication, if your pet’s comfort cannot be maintained, it may be time to consider euthanasia to prevent further suffering.

What will happen at our in-home euthanasia visit?

At the scheduled time, your vet will arrive with everything needed to keep your pet comfortable. Appointments usually last 30-60 minutes, but we take as much time as you and your family need. Your vet will answer all your questions and ensure you feel at peace with the decisions made.

The process begins with a gentle sedative and pain relief injection under the skin, helping even the most anxious pets relax and drift off to sleep within minutes. When you're ready to say goodbye, the vet will administer an anaesthetic. You’re welcome to stay with your pet throughout, knowing every step is taken to prevent discomfort or distress.

After confirming your pet has peacefully passed, you can take some private time if needed. When ready, we’ll assist with aftercare arrangements—whether for home care or transport to one of our trusted crematoriums. If you’ve chosen to have ashes returned, the crematorium will contact you to confirm your wishes and arrange delivery with care and respect.
